How to get a Job with no experience

by Peter
(Tacoma)

I was born in the US, but I went to Nigeria where I did my high school education and I have just come back to the US.

Since I'm a US citizen, I want to get a job, but almost all jobs are looking for experienced people.

I am a hard working person, I love working with people and working for people, but I can't do that because I need to be experience.

Please help me. I want to know the type of jobs I can get. I'm a college student and I'm not experienced. So what type of jobs can I get?

Comment from Stephen Craine

Peter, this is a question I get asked many times by people trying to get their first sales job.

They have heard from experienced people how well paid some sales jobs are, and how secure a career in sales can be.

But without experience no one will give them a chance to prove themselves.

There are two ways to get a sales job if you have no experience or successful track record to show a potential employer.

1. Gain experience by taking any sales job you can and prove you have what it takes to be successful.

Because you have no experience these will be the jobs that other people do not want. Self employed, commission only, door to door selling etc..

Give yourself 6 to 12 months of doing this so you can build up a track record of success.

It will be very hard work, long hours, and you will be taking a lot of rejection. But if you can put in enough energy and resilience, and have some documented success to show future employees it will be worth it.

I built my first records of sales experience selling products and services part time as well as working my regualar job.

I took sales jobs that only desperate people would have tried. I needed a record of success that I could show employees, and it worked.

It took me a year of hard work, long hours, and taking a lot of rejection. But I was then able to impress an employer with my tenacity and I had sales records to prove it.

2. The second way to get a sales job with no experience is to go for sales job in an industry where you know the products.

To be successful in sales you need sales skills and product knowledge. If you can show an employer that you have fantastic product and industry knowledge they may be willing to give you the sales training.

Show your resilience

If you can show that you have the resilience to build your product knowledge, take low paying difficult sales jobs, and keep knocking on employers doors, you will show you have what it takes to be successful in a sales role.

Learn all you can, get as much evidence of your results as you can, and take every opportunity to get in front of an employer.

I wish you every success with your quest.
