Hypnosis for Sales Success An interview with Donna Craine of DC Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis for sales people and business managers may be something that you haven’t thought about until now.
Donna Craine is a clinical hypnotherapist that specialises in using hypnotherapy with sales and business clients to help them to become more successful.
Being successful in business and sales takes attitude and mental strength as well as practical techniques.
Hypnotherapy is increasingly being used by sales professionals and business managers to overcome obstacles to success and give them a positive advantage over the competition.
I interviewed Donna because I wanted to highlight some of the benefits that hypnotherapy can offer.
How long have you been practicing hypnotherapy?
I have been practising hypnotherapy in a clinical setting for 3 years .
What qualifications have you achieved?
I have achieved a certificate in clinical hypnosis. A diploma in clinical hypnosis, and a practitioner diploma in clinical hypnosis.
This will lead to an MSC in Clinical hypnosis when I have completed a further cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy practitioner diploma, and a research module with Thames Valley University.
What first got you interested in hypnotherapy and what made you want to start your own practice?
I have held an interest in psychology and therapeutic techniques since my early twenties.
At this time I worked in residential homes for children with behavioural difficulties.
Many had experienced very difficult things in their lives which were often barriers to them moving forward when they arrived at the home.
I wanted to find ways to help them overcome those barriers and to make positive changes in their lives.
I trained in counselling at levels 2 and 3 and I found this training very valuable and wanted to further my knowledge to something more solution focussed.
I chose hypnotherapy because it gave me a good range of therapeutic techniques, including psychoanalytical and cognitive behavioural, which meant that I didn’t have to stick to one school of thought.
My fascination with psychology grew the more I studied, and this lead to a desire to use my skills, which is why I started my practice.
I had every faith in the techniques I learned and wanted to be able to help people. I know that sometimes we all need a bit of support in our lives. Since my main career focus has been around the social care setting I wanted to transfer those skills to help a wider demographic of people with a wider range of goals.
What sort of obstacles have you overcome using hypnotherapy for sales people and business managers.
Using hypnosis for sales and business people I’ve found many of the barriers appear to stem from one thing - Negative “self talk”.
By this I mean the things we say to our selves. People often come to me with a belief such as: I have no motivation, or I can’t cope with my workload.
People also come to me because of stress, or performance anxiety about presentations or meetings. It is my belief that I can help by using hypnosis for sales people and business managers so they are able to change their self-talk or attitude about what they perceive to be the problem.
Can you tell us about some successes you have had with hypnosis for sales and business professionals?
I have used hypnotherapy with many clients to help them to overcome being nervous in job interviews.
One specific client had a job interview for a promotion within his own company. He was especially nervous because the people interviewing him already were aware of his skills and development needs.
To him that meant that he couldn’t talk, well let’s say, as freely as he would have done being interviewed by strangers. He felt under great pressure because he knew he was being evaluated on his work and results so far with the company.
Although he felt he had done a good job he also held anxiety about the feedback he may receive, or about performing badly in the interview, and how this might affect his reputation within the company.
After a free consultation and two hypnotherapy sessions, one to help him to overcome his self doubts and one to help prepare him for the interview, he felt much better. He performed very well in the interview and I was really pleased when he called me to say he had got the job.
What are the potential benefits of hypnosis for sales individuals, sales managers, or small business owners?
There are several benefits of using hypnosis for sales and business people:
If you are a small business owner or sales manager, and you have a staff team, pastoral care is becoming an increasingly important element of being an employer.
Hypnotherapy can be beneficial in helping people overcome barriers to returning to work because of stress or other emotional reasons.
Also helping people overcome habits, such as smoking, can have a massive influence on individual and company productivity.
Hypnotherapy, and especially self hypnosis, is a great way to goal set.
It helps individuals to motivate themselves to meet targets.
This means they can achieve important outcomes for both themselves and the business.
I also provide group work from my practices in Manchester and Tameside to help people set goals and targets.
I often work with other specialists to ensure that the individuals are getting expert help on both their personal targets and hypnosis. One example is the nutrition groups we run where we combine the work of a Doctor in nutrition and my work as a hypnotherapist.
Many people may be worried about being hypnotised, what would you say to them?
Hypnosis isn’t about “being hypnotised”.
It isn’t really something that can be imposed on a person without their wish. People go into trance many times a day, like when driving between clients. The mind just drifts off and you find yourself at your destination without having been consciously aware of the journey.
This is a form of hypnosis. All the time you have remained in control of your safety and wellbeing, but you just simply allowed your mind to wander.
It’s no different in the therapy chair. Your conscious mind is designed to keep you safe, and even though hypnosis works with the unconscious mind your conscious will keep you safe and in control throughout.
